Increasing Alexa Ranking

By Online Earner | Nov 30, 2009

Greetings and welcome, Gelt Gatherers.

Today, I want to say a little about Alexa, and, moreover, Alexa rankings.

My career as an online moolah-maker pre-dates Alexa, so I was a shade sceptical when it first appeared back in the late 1990s. At that time, we appeared to have more than enough search engines spewing forth more than enough irrelevant results, so I did not see the point of another, other than as a corporate exercise for the then burgeoning Amazon.

Anyhow, all that aside. Alexa is a rough gauge of the popularity of your site. Since it relies on some rather unscientific data gathering methods, its findings can be skewed (some like to pronounce that ma·nip·u·lat·ed).

If you plan on selling a website, or selling advertising on an existing site, then it can be worthwhile trying to improve your Alexa ranking as many do consider Alexa ranking a good reflection of the popularity and reach of a site.

Some methods you can use to improve your Alexa ranking are:

  • the principal means of gathering data for Alexa is via the Alexa toolbar; so consider installing it; it sends data back to Alexa when you access a web page.
  • install an Alexa graphic or widget on your site; again this is one of the way Alexa gather data about visitors to your site.
  • promote your site in Asian forums; our friends and fellow moolah-makers on the Indian subcontinent, and throughout large swathes of Asia seem to consider Alexa important; many will use the toobar.
  • solicit large traffic spikes; this can be achieved using sites such as StumbleUpon and Digg.

Breaking in to the top 1000 on Alexa is a very substantial undertaking. However, by using some of the methods above it is possible to dramatically improve your Alexa ranking.
